The idea
What circular logistics means for a small store
Circular logistics means designing how products and packaging move so that materials stay in use for longer: less packaging in the first place, packaging that can be reused or recycled, and returns that get products back into sale rather than into waste.
For most independent stores, the biggest levers are simple: box sizes that fit the product, less void fill, fewer mixed materials and a returns process that inspects and resells items where possible.

Regulation
Rules sellers should know about in 2026
European Union: the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2025/40, has been in force since 11 February 2025, and the European Commission lists its application date as 12 August 2026. It aims to reduce packaging and packaging waste, with measures including waste prevention, reuse targets and recyclability requirements, phased in over time. Which obligations apply to you, and when, depends on your role and products—check the regulation and national guidance.
United Kingdom: packaging extended producer responsibility (EPR) applies to UK-established organisations above set thresholds. GOV.UK states, for example, that you may be an obligated producer if you supplied or imported more than 25 tonnes of packaging in the UK in the previous year and had an annual turnover of £1 million or more, with higher obligations for larger producers. Use the GOV.UK checker for your situation.
Environmental claims: in the US, the FTC’s Green Guides explain how to avoid misleading environmental marketing. Other markets have their own rules. This is general information, not legal advice.
Seven steps to cut packaging waste
1. Audit what you actually ship
List your box and mailer sizes, fillers, tape and inserts, and which products ship in which. You can’t reduce what you haven’t measured; weigh a typical order’s packaging.
2. Right-size the packaging
Fewer, better-fitting sizes reduce filler and wasted space. Test that products still arrive undamaged—breakages create far more waste than a slightly bigger box.
3. Simplify materials
Packaging made from one material is usually easier for customers to sort. Check what local recycling systems accept in your main markets rather than assuming.
4. Drop what customers don’t need
Printed inserts, extra wrapping and plastic bags inside boxes can often go. Offer a ‘minimal packaging’ note at checkout if your setup supports order notes.
5. Reuse inbound packaging carefully
Supplier boxes and fill can be reused for outbound orders if they protect the product and present acceptably.
6. Design returns to recover products
Clear sizing and product information reduce returns in the first place. When items do come back, inspect, restock or refurbish where possible. Shopify and WooCommerce both document how returns or refunds are handled in the admin.
7. Explain the change to customers—accurately
Tell customers what you changed and how to dispose of the packaging. Claims such as ‘recyclable’ or ‘plastic-free’ must be true for the whole item and qualified where recycling isn’t widely available.
Before you call your packaging ‘sustainable’
Rules differ by country—take qualified advice for your markets.
- Each claim is specific (“box made from recycled cardboard”), not vague (“eco-friendly”).
- You can back every claim with supplier documentation.
- Recyclability claims reflect what customers in your markets can actually recycle.
- You haven’t implied the whole product is green when only the packaging changed.
- Any carbon or waste-reduction figure comes from your own measured data, with its method explained.
- You’ve checked whether EU packaging rules or UK packaging EPR apply to your business.
Your platform matters less than your process
Shopify, Wix and WooCommerce don’t decide your packaging, but they do affect how easily you can record package sizes for shipping rates, collect order notes and manage returns. Check what your current setup supports before buying another app or plugin.
Avoid choosing a platform for a single sustainability feature. Pick the one that fits how you sell and ship, then build the packaging and returns process around it.
