Shopify vs Wixfor dropshipping

Dropshipping lives or dies on the connection between your store and your suppliers. This guide looks only at that: where products come from, how orders reach suppliers, and what’s built in versus what depends on an app.

Recommendations here are our editorial judgement from the documented facts — not rankings, test results or scores. We haven’t tested these platforms hands-on.

Editorial guidance

The short answer

Neither platform is a supplier. On both, dropshipping works through supplier apps or services. Shopify lists dropshipping apps in its App Store and offers its own Shopify Collective app. Wix documents Modalyst as a dropshipping integration, plus apps such as Spocket and print-on-demand services. Available suppliers and automation differ by platform and app — confirm your preferred supplier works with the platform before you choose.

  • ShopifyDropshipping is the business and your preferred supplier apps support Shopify.
  • WixDropshipped products complement a website or brand on Wix, and your supplier integrates with Wix.

Basics

How dropshipping works on either platform

You list a supplier’s products in your store. When a customer orders, the order is passed to the supplier, who ships directly to the customer. Your platform holds the storefront, checkout and customer; the supplier app handles product data and order forwarding.

That means the supplier app often matters as much as the platform. Its catalogue, shipping times, pricing rules and sync behaviour are set by the app provider, not by Shopify or Wix.

Day to day

Running a dropshipping store

Your real workload is customer service: delivery questions, returns and stock surprises. Before choosing, read how your intended supplier app handles returns, out-of-stock items and tracking numbers on each platform.

Shopify Collective is Shopify’s own app for selling other Shopify brands’ products, with orders forwarded and tracking synced. It’s free to use for eligible stores — but access depends on supported locations, currencies, account eligibility and other requirements, and some features may be limited or unavailable. Free to use also doesn’t mean free to run a store: subscriptions, product costs and other fees still apply.

On Wix, Modalyst is an officially documented integration, connected either from the Wix dashboard or through the Modalyst app. Product selection, pricing, shipping settings, fulfilment and how much is automated depend on the integration and how you configure it. Check which suppliers ship to your customers.

Strengths and limitations

Shopify

Works well when

  • Dropshipping and print-on-demand apps listed in the Shopify App Store
  • Shopify Collective, free for eligible stores, for products from other Shopify brands
  • Store-first admin for products and orders

Watch for

  • Most supplier apps are third-party, with their own terms and fees
  • A transaction fee may apply with third-party payment providers, depending on plan and region

Wix

Works well when

  • Modalyst, an officially documented Wix dropshipping integration
  • Strong design tools for building a brand around products
  • Print-on-demand integrations

Watch for

  • Selling requires an eligible paid plan
  • Supplier availability depends on which services integrate with Wix — check yours
  • Some settings — such as Modalyst shipping rates — need manual setup

Before you choose a supplier app

Tick these off before you commit.

  • Does it ship to your customers’ countries, and how fast?
  • How does it sync price and stock changes?
  • How are returns and refunds handled?
  • Does it add tracking numbers to your orders automatically?
  • What does the app itself charge?
  • Can you order samples to check quality?
